Senate deal to halt government shutdown

The US government shutdown is set to end after Senate Republicans and Democrats reached a deal on a temporary funding bill.

Democrat Chuck Schumer said his party would "vote to re-open the government" as it would continue to negotiate with Republicans on immigration.

Kabul : Taliban claims responsibility for hotel attack

Gunmen raided the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul killing at least 18 people during a 12-hour standoff with security forces that ended Sunday, Afghan authorities said.

Of those killed, 14 were foreign nationals and four were Afghans, according to Najib Danish, spokesman for the Ministry of Interior.

Four gunmen were also killed by Afghan security forces responding to the attack, he said.

Rockets fired from Syria hit Turkey border

Turkey launched a ground operation across the border into northern Syria on Sunday, in a move likely to raise tensions with the United States.

Turkish officials said the troops entered the Afrin region a day after Turkish jets pounded targets there in an attempt to drive US-allied Kurdish militia from the area.

"Operation Olive Branch is ongoing as planned and the ground operation has started," the Turkish armed forces said in a statement.

The land operation comes hours after Turkish jets targeted US-backed, Syrian-Kurdish YPG militia in the area, killing at least eight people and injuring 13, according to the Syrian Democratic Forces General Command.

France's most-celebrated chef Paul Bocuse has died at the age of 91, after suffering from Parkinson's disease for several years.

He died in his famous restaurant near Lyon, a local chef close to the family told AFP news agency.

French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute, describing him as the "incarnation of French cuisine".

Bocuse rose to fame in the 1970s as a proponent of "nouvelle cuisine", a healthier form of cooking.

The movement "profoundly changed" French cooking, Mr Macron said.

"His name alone summed up French gastronomy in its generosity and respect for tradition but also its inventiveness," the French president said.

Chefs across the country would be "crying in their kitchens", he added.

YouTube says Logan Paul's "punishment must fit the crime" over a controversial vlog he uploaded onto the platform.

Logan was criticised for joking about a dead body he had found in a Japanese forest known for suicides.

Speaking exclusively to Newsbeat, YouTube's chief business officer says the case was "borderline".

It took 10 days for YouTube to admit the video shouldn't have been published.

Although the platform had earlier said it "prohibits violent or gory content posted in a shocking, sensational or disrespectful manner."

Logan removed the video two days after it had been put up, but by then it had been viewed more than five million times.

Posting on Instagram he said they are both "very happy and in love", joking that their cats are happy for them too.

Syria: Turkey war planes launch strikes on Afrin

Turkish war planes have launched air strikes on Kurdish positions in northern Syria, in a move likely to cause tensions with the US.

Turkey is seeking to oust Kurdish fighters from Afrin, held by them since 2012. Some of these forces helped the US to fight the Islamic State group.

There are also reports of pro-Turkish Syrian rebels advancing on the city.

Turkey says it is launching a full military operation against these Kurds - which it considers a terrorist group.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has also threatened to strike at the city of Manbij - some 100km away from Afrin in another Kurdish area - as a next target.
