Indian security tight ahead of film release

Security has been tightened in parts of India ahead of the release of a Bollywood film which has generated months of violent protests.

Schools have been shut in a Delhi suburb following an attack on a school bus, and cinemas in several states say they will not be screening the film.

Hardline Hindu groups allege Padmaavat is disrespectful of their culture because it depicts a romance between a Hindu queen and a Muslim king.

Avalanche and volcano hit Japan's Kusatsu ski resort

At least 14 people have been injured by an avalanche and volcanic eruption near a Japanese ski resort.

The eruption sent rocks raining down over a kilometre-wide area near Kusatsu in central Gunma prefecture, say local media.

Four people who were riding a gondola at the resort at the time were among those injured.

Asian wildlife trafficking 'kingpin' Boonchai Bach arrested

Thai police have arrested a man alleged to be the head of Asia's biggest illegal wildlife trading networks.

Boonchai Bach, a 40-year-old Thai of Vietnamese origin, was detained in a town on the border with Laos.

He faces up to four years in jail for smuggling protected animal parts like rhino horns and elephant ivory.

Animal trafficking is a lucrative black market trade. Police said the suspect was "ringleader" of a "major smuggling syndicate" operating over a decade.

'Shaking' Malaysia Airlines flight turns back to Australia

A Malaysia Airlines flight was forced to divert to central Australia after a technical issue left the aircraft "shuddering", passengers say.

Flight MH122 was travelling from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur on Thursday when it turned back not far from Broome, in Australia's north-west.

The plane, carrying 224 people, landed safely at Alice Springs Airport at 17:48 local time (06:48 GMT).

Passengers said the plane had been shaking and making loud noises.

In a statement, Malaysia Airlines said the plane was diverted after it experienced a "technical fault on one of the aircraft's engines".

"Safety was not at any time compromised," it said.
